Potenza Picena Church of Saint Francis

Next to the public gardens is the Church of Saint Francis, originally built in the 1200s and reconstructed in the mid-18th century. The façade and bell tower are attributed to the architect, Pietro Augustoni. According to tradition, it was the Saint himself from Assisi who founded the Franciscan Monastery of Monte Santo. On the walls along the stairs up to the choir loft, there are remnants of frescoes from the 14th century. The inlaid choir is the work of the Moschetti, a carpenter who worked with ebony. Above the main altar there is a painting portraying the Immaculate Conception with St. Nicholas and St. Francis; during the 18th century it replaced the previous polyptych by Vittorio Crivelli (1491) which is now partially missing.
