Appignano The Sanctuary of Forano

The origins of the church date back to between the 12th and 13th centuries.  In that same place, there was a hospital and possibly a Benedictine settlement.  Around 1215, Saint Francis arrived at the Forano forest.  The presence of Sant Francis is indicated on an ancient oak door which is inserted into the facade and through which the Saint made his entrance. On the architrave over the door it reads: “Haec est illa prisca janua dum hic adfuit S. Franciscus.”  On a part of the same wall, there is a fresco of the Annunciation, dating back to the first half of the 1400s. The village of Forano witnessed a miraculous event.  On the night between 1 and 2 February 1289, the Virgin, with the baby in her arms, appeared to a monk, Corrado da Offida, while he was praying in the forest near the convent. After this event, a Chapel was built and a painting was dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels.  The Chapel was completely restored during the second half of the 1700s and embellished with gold plating of the altar.  The paintings currently present inside are a reproduction of the originals, carried out by the artist, Silvia Giuliodori.  Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the church and convent were restored numerous times.  15th century.
